TRB is cosponsoring a webinar on July 21, 2011, from 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. EDT, which is being conducted by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), that will examine enhancements to the Highway Capacity Manual 2010 (HCM2010) that can be applied to planning and preliminary engineering applications. A major focus of the webinar will be a demonstration of the new generalized service volume tables that are designed to allow for quick estimates of level of service for freeways, multi-lane highways, and urban streets. Participants must register at least 24 hours prior to the start of the webinar, space is limited.

SciFinder Desktop Client ends June 30, 2011

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) will cease support for desktop client access to SciFinder on June 30, 2011. It is no longer available to download. All users will need to migrate to the SciFinder web version by following these steps:

  1. Register with CAS to use SciFinder Web Version. Registration requires a valid “ncsu.edu” e-mail address. Users must agree not to use SciFinder for commercial research.
  2. Log into SciFinder Web version via the Libraries’ SciFinder guide: http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/databases/scifinder_scholar.html. You can access SciFinder from on- or off-campus, but you must go through the Libraries’ site in order to be authenticated as an NCSU user for off-campus access.
  3. Remove desktop client software from your computers (per request from CAS).

New Book by NCSU Biomedical Engineering Professor

Biomedical Materials

Roger Narayan

Dr. Roger Narayan is a Professor at the University of North Carolina-North Carolina State University Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering. He is the author of over one hundred publications and several book chapters on microscale and nanoscale processing of biological and biomedical materials. He currently serves as an editorial board member of a number of professional journals, including as editor-in-chief of Materials Science and Engineering C, Biomimetic and Supramolecular Systems. Dr. Narayan has also co-edited Printed Biomaterials: Novel Processing and Modeling Techniques for Medicine and Surgery, Advances in Biomedical and Biomimetic Materials, and Advances in Bioceramics and Porous Ceramics. Dr. Narayan has received several honors for his research activities, including the North Carolina State University Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award, the University of North Carolina Jefferson-Pilot Fellowship in Academic Medicine, the National Science Faculty Early Career Development Award, and the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award. He has been elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science as well as Fellow of ASM International.
